The Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) is a non-profit and (in some countries) charitable non-governmental organization dedicated toFree Software as in freedom. Vision of Free SoftwareAccess to software determines who may participate in a digital society. Therefore, the freedoms to use, copy, modify and redistribute software -- as described in the Free Software definition -- allow equal participation in the information age. The vision of Free Software is one of a stable basis for freedom in a digital world -- both in an economic and socio-ethical context. Free Software is one important cornerstone for freedom, democracy, human rights and development in a digital society. The FSFE is dedicated to supporting all aspects of Free Software in Europe. Creating awareness for these issues, securing Free Software politically and legally, and giving people freedom by supporting development of Free Software are central issues of the FSFE. For these reasons, FSFE was founded in 2001 as the European sister organisation of the Free Software Foundation in Boston, MA, USA. Both are financially, legally and personally independent from each other as parts of the international Free Software Foundation network. |

This guide (developed in the context of the FLOSSMETRICS and OpenTTT projects) present a set of guidelines and suggestions for the adoption of open source software within SMEs, using a ladder model that will guide companies from the initial selection and adoption of FLOSS within the IT infrastructure up to the creation of suitable business models based on open source software. The guide is split into an introduction to FLOSS and a catalog of open source applications, selected to fulfill the requests that were gathered in the interviews and audit in the OpenTTT project. The application areas are infrastructural software (ranging from network and system management to security), ERP and CRM applications, groupware, document management, content management systems (CMS), VoIP, graphics/CAD/GIS systems, desktop applications, engineering and manufacturing, vertical business applications and eLearning. This is the third edition of the guide; the guide is distributed under a CC-attribution-sharealike 3.0 license. The author is Carlo Daffara (cdaffara@conecta.it). |

ENGLISH http://fuss.bz.it/welcome-fuss-project Welcome to the FUSS! ProjectFree Upgrade Southtyrol's Schools (FUSS) is a project funded by the European Social Fund which has upgraded the computer systems of all the italian schools in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen, removing all the software with a proprietary license used in the school activity with the FUSS GNU/Linux Soledad distribution. The project has developed the software solution and released it under a free software license. The main goal of the project is to think about computer science as a trasveral tool for teaching and not only as a specific discipline or a simple work to learn to use a specific software solution, giving thus a valid support to the schools' didactics. Because of this we are distributing to students, teachers and families the software used at school, helping the development of a digital culture based of condivision and on knowledge sharing. |

Across the world several million regions, cities and local governments are faced with the same situations and challenges in terms of e-government. So why not unite their efforts? We are creating a collaborative software ecosystem, where government organizations, non-profits and the private sector work together to share the cost of enhanced capabilities. The larger the community that shares the applications, the more potential benefits derived by each participant. Improvements to the software may be provided or funded by any organization. All participating organizations benefit from any one’s contributions at no additional cost and with no restrictions.
The objective is to deliver tools for public administrations and on-line web services to citizens most effectively and efficiently by reducing or eliminating the duplication of effort between localities through sharing and collaboration. We enable governments to benefit from greater technological independence and together build tools that are truly suited to their own needs. PloneGov success results from a close collaboration between public organizations, open source communities and Zea Partners, an international non-profit network for companies building open source solutions. Initiated by small towns, PloneGov is open to all type of collaborations. It already reaches cities, regions, parliaments and administrations. Truly international, the project spans over 3 continents and reaches 20 countries. |
